POST DETAILS
Panel of Applicants:
An internal panel of suitable applicants may be set up to fill vacancies which may occur within a specific time period (four months for teacher posts and the duration of the school year for SNA posts) from the date on which the Board approves the successful candidate.
Additional Information:
This full time SNA post has been sanctioned through the SNA scheme in order to provide communication support through Irish Sign Language (ISL) for a specific student. This SNA post is specifically and solely to provide communication support through ISL for one of our students who has ASD and a moderate learning disability. Therefore a qualification in and proficiency in ISL is a requirement for this post. Ideally the successful candidate will hold a qualification in Deaf Studies, ISL teaching or ISL Interpreting.
SNA redeployment will not affect this ISL SNA post as this sanction is for a post over and above the allocation to the school granted by the NCSE.
Duties, will be ring-fenced around the provision of ISL support to a specific student and will include supporting student’s communication with teachers, staff and other students. The successful candidate will also be required to support the school to up skill its whole capacity in ISL.
The position is that of SNA, with all usual SNA terms and conditions attached. The successful candidate will be placed on the appropriate point of SNA salary scale, having due regard to their qualification and experience. This is an interim arrangement until such times as the provision of the Irish Sign Language Act 2017 are implemented, which provides for a scheme for ISL support for students in recognised schools whose primary language is ISL.
Document proficiency in ISL is essential for all applicants of this post. Competence in the use of ISL may be assessed as part of the selection process.
The Centre for Deaf Studies was establish in 2001 and is part of the School of Linguistic, Speech and Communication Sciences, at TCD. It is the only university offering Deaf Studies related courses in Ireland. Graduates from both the 2 year and 4 year program have completed the same level of study in Irish Sign Language reaching a standard in the range B2 - C2 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). https://www.cambridgeenglish.org/exams-and-tests/cefr/
Other Routes
Signature Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Sign Language Interpreting with Level 6 NVQ Certificate in Irish Sign Language (equivalent to NFQ Level 8)
Masters in Interpreting Studies from Queens University Belfast (with Irish Sign Language / English language pair ) (equivalent to NFQ Level 9)
Please Note
Applicants presenting with NFQ 6 or below are unlikely to have the necessary language skills or understanding of language acquisition / language processing to meet your student’s needs.
Being a CODA (Child of Deaf Adult) or native ISL user does not of itself guarantee language proficiency.
