Description:
Nurture Africa (formerly A-Z Children’s Charity) is looking for primary and secondary teachers to work on a 3 OR 5 week volunteer placement in Uganda in summer 2012.
Our programmes are packed with variety and include teaching in one of our partner schools, community outreaches and a construction project. All activities are team-based and participants will receive great support from our Volunteer Coordinators; both pre-trip and during the placement in Uganda. We also have an amazing team of Ugandan staff who work alongside volunteers and help you get immersed in the local culture.
We are looking for people with the following attributes: ability to work well in a team, willing to learn, enthusiastic, adaptable and up for a challenge.
Undergraduates are welcome, but applicants must be at least 20 years old at the commencement of the placement.
3 Week placements : 1. 30 June- 21 July 2012 OR 2. 21 July- 11th August 2012 – These placements are in a semi-urban setting, close to Nurture Africa’s new Paediatric Clinic, and offer a high level of support from the Irish coordinators.
• All volunteers must cover their own expenses (including flights and travel vaccinations) and fundraise at least €2000 to go directly to the charity, which exists to provide healthcare and education for orphans and vulnerable children in Uganda. Once in Uganda a mere €130 covers your airport transfers, accommodation, meals and private health insurance for the full 3 weeks.
5 Week Placement: 30 June – 4 August 2012 - This placement offers a beautiful rural setting with an amazing sense of community and an opportunity to make a longer-term impact with your work.
• All volunteers must cover their own expenses (including flights and travel vaccinations) and fundraise at least €2500 to go directly to the charity, which exists to provide healthcare and education for orphans and vulnerable children in Uganda. Once in Uganda a mere €200 covers your airport transfers, accommodation, meals and private health insurance for the full 5 weeks.
Nurture Africa works all year round in specific areas of Uganda and our summer volunteer programme has been established there since 2003. Our continuous link with these Ugandan communities enables Nurture Africa to make a lasting difference with our work.
Work is balanced with rest and there are rest days in the timetable which can be used to go on excursions like a safari, a trek to observe Uganda’s wild mountain gorillas or white-water rafting on the River Nile.
You can download an application form from www.nurtureafrica.ie then complete and return it by email or post. Applicants will be contacted in due course for an interview, and those who are successful will be allocated places on a first-come-first-served basis. Places are limited so early application is recommended to avoid disappointment.
Email miriam@nurtureafrica.ie for an application form or for more information.
This is an opportunity to develop your personal qualities and professional skills. Nurture Africa volunteers can expect to experience authentic Ugandan culture, make new friends and gain a new perspective on the world. We know no one can change the world in a few weeks but your contribution can make a big impact in some of Uganda’s poorest communities.
NOTE: Nurture Africa is the new name for A-Z Children’s Charity. Our vision remains for the most vulnerable children in Uganda to lead productive lives and become positive influences on society. Our focus is still on providing healthcare and education for orphans and vulnerable children.
