Kilmacanogue National School is a Catholic school nestled beneath the Wicklow Mountains. It has been part of the fabric of Kilmacanogue since 1960. There is a wonderful opportunity to join this lovely school and its community due to the vacancy of the position of Deputy Principal. The appointment to this position is a permanent one and will be made through open competition in line with Circular 0044/2019.
Applicants must be fully registered with the Teaching Council under Route 1 (Primary) and have at least 5 years recognised teaching service, two of which must be in a recognised primary school within the Republic of Ireland.
The Deputy Principal will be expected to work closely with the Principal and to support and develop effective leadership within the school. In overall terms, the Deputy Principal will be expected to co-operate fully with the Principal in the execution of the Principal's duties and to act and deputise as the Principal whenever required.
As outlined in Circular 0044/2019, the needs of schools constantly change and evolve and as such the duties of the Deputy Principal may be reviewed from time to time resulting in reassignment of the role and responsibilities within the Leadership and Management Team.
The specific Roles and Responsibilities for this position of Deputy Principal relate to the four domains of Leadership and Management outlined in Circular 0044/2019 as well as in the document Looking at Our Schools 2022 (LAOS): A Quality Framework for Primary Schools and Special Schools:
1) Leading Teaching and Learning
2) Managing the Organisation
3) Leading School Development
4) Developing Leadership Capacity
In accordance with the above domains and collaborating closely with the Principal, the duties attached to the role of Deputy Principal will involve whole school curricular development, policy development, day to day management of resources and personnel as well as long term strategic planning for the future development of the school.
In addition, evidence of the following is essential to the role:
•Foster a commitment to inclusion, equality of opportunity and the holistic development of each pupil, including supporting children with additional needs, and creating effective systems to facilitate monitoring the progress of each pupil
•Review inclusion-related policies and practices with the Principal, Board of Management and staff to ensure they are implemented effectively school-wide
•Develop and implement a system to promote professional responsibility and accountability
•Manage the planning and implementation of the school curriculum especially the redeveloped Primary Curriculum Framework (PCF) and have an excellent understanding of the current national priorities in primary schools
•Create and maintain a positive school culture and a safe, healthy and purposeful learning environment, and sustain it through effective communication with a proven ability to work collaboratively with all members of the school community
•Be flexible enough and prepared to adapt to facilitate the ever-changing and developing needs of Kilmacanogue National School, both during and outside of scheduled school hours
•Have the ability to lead SSE (School Self-Evaluation) processes and ensure they are in line with the DEY (Department of Education and Youth)
•Work as part of ISM/SLT (In-School Management/Senior Leadership Team) and encourage all teachers to take on and carry out leadership roles
•Work alongside the Principal towards a shared vision for the school that is Kilmacanogue National School, communicating the guiding vision for the school and leading its realisation in the context of the school's characteristic spirit
•Promote and facilitate the development of pupil voice, pupil participation and pupil leadership
•Continue to uphold the Catholic Ethos and to respect and foster a positive, inclusive and positive holistic environment for all the school community that is Kilmacanogue National School
The successful applicant will be required to provide proof of appropriate qualifications in Education and a recognised qualification to teach Religion
Appointment will be subject, but not limited to:
•Satisfactory references
•Current and ongoing Teaching Council Registration
•Current Garda Vetting requirements
•Occupational Health screening
