The successful candidate should demonstrate a responsive, reflective and evidence-informed approach to leadership and school improvement. It is a core function of the Deputy Principal’s role to act as Principal in the Principal’s absence.

The Deputy Principal will work closely with the Principal to support and develop effective leadership within the school. The specific roles and responsibilities associated with this position relate to the four domains of Leadership and Management outlined in Circular 0044/2019:

Working closely with the Principal, the duties attached to the role may include whole-school curricular development; policy development and implementation; day-to-day organisation and management; supporting inclusive, special education and mainstream provision; school self-evaluation; staff and pupil wellbeing; and long-term strategic planning for the future development of the school.

In accordance with Circular 0044/2019, as the needs of the school continue to evolve, a review of duties may result in the reassignment of roles and responsibilities within the leadership and management team. The following skills, knowledge, experience and competencies are desirable:

• A strong understanding of, and commitment to, the Catholic ethos and values of the school.
• Excellent knowledge and understanding of leadership, management and administration in a primary school.
• Excellent communication, organisational and interpersonal skills.
• An in-depth understanding of the Primary Curriculum Framework and Primary Curriculum, supported by a broad range of teaching experience and knowledge.

• Evidence of, and a commitment to, ongoing professional development.
• An understanding of current and future developments in education.
• A commitment to shared leadership and a willingness to delegate, develop leadership capacity and empower others.
• Demonstrated ability to lead school development, including curriculum development and implementation, school-based initiatives, school self-evaluation and the effective use of resources.

Applicants must meet the eligibility requirements for appointment to the post of Deputy Principal in accordance with the relevant Department of Education circulars and regulations.
