iScoil is the leading online education provider in Ireland. The service is for young people aged 13–16 who are not in mainstream school. Learners are referred to iScoil through Tusla’s Educational Welfare Service.
We deliver a flexible, personalised, and evidence-informed learning model, accredited by Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI). The programme delivers excellent learning outcomes and a high progression rate, supporting learners to move confidently into further education, training, employment, or a return to school. The Role
The Learning Technologist is the functional lead for iScoil’s Virtual Learning Environment (Moodle). Working collaboratively across the team, the successful candidate will have responsibility for ensuring that iScoil provides a high-quality and positive learning experience for all, informed by the latest developments in user experience, accessibility, Universal Design for Learning, and digital tools for learning. They will ensure iScoil’s technology-enabled learning environment remains inclusive, engaging, and accessible for every learner, providing support for staff and students.
Reports to: Chief Operating Officer
Key working relationships: Director of Education, Systems Administrator, eLearning Coordinator, Instructional Designer, mentors, and tutors
Key Responsibilities
User Experience and Design
Lead the technical and visual evolution of the user experience (UX) of the VLE, ensuring a high-quality, professional, and easy to navigate platform that supports learning
Develop and maintain the WordPress website, ensuring a high-quality and professional user experience
Extract and analyse system data to provide actionable insights and propose pedagogical solutions
Identify and present opportunities for innovation and optimisation
Conduct technical and pedagogical feasibility tests in collaboration with the team
VLE Functional Administration
Lead the technical setup of courses and student learning plans
Lead User Acceptance Testing (UAT) for VLE upgrades, new plugin deployments, and workflow changes, ensuring they align with user needs before full-scale deployment
Lead the technical Quality Control (QC) of learning resources and courses, ensuring all links and interactive elements are functional
Monitor system integrations
Develop and maintain all functional VLE documentation, ensuring "how-to" guides are accessible
Account Management, Support, and Capacity Building
Act as the primary point of contact for troubleshooting and technical support for students and families
Manage student account creation, ongoing support and offboarding across platforms (Moodle, Google Workspace, Salesforce)
Support the onboarding and offboarding of staff, including the delivery of training
Manage user access and permissions
Identify emerging training needs and develop and deliver training to meet those needs
Governance and Compliance
Keep up-to-date with technical and regulatory developments and advise on risks and opportunities
Contribute to the development of technical policies and procedural manuals, ensuring technology supports pedagogic goals
Implement data retention policies and ensure adherence to data protection legislation
Criteria
Essential Knowledge and Experience
A relevant qualification at Level 8 (or equivalent) on the NFQ
A minimum of three years’ experience as a learning technologist or in a related role
Proven expertise in VLE administration (Moodle an advantage), and course-building environments
Expertise in applying learning design models (such as ADDIE), knowledge of technology-enhanced teaching practices, with a proven ability to integrate Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and accessibility requirements
Demonstrated experience providing technical support to non-technical users
Essential Skills and Competencies
A high-level of digital proficiency with the ability to learn and adapt to new platforms quickly
An aptitude for technical implementation and troubleshooting
Strong analytical skills and the ability to identify technical and process-based solutions
Excellent communication skills, including the ability to explain complex problems, technical issues, and solutions clearly, to different stakeholders, in a professional manner
The ability to work independently and manage competing priorities
Experience collaborating with a multi-disciplinary team
Desirable Knowledge and Experience
Hands-on experience with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and jQuery
Experience of website design, development and maintenance (WordPress an advantage)
Experience automating workflows and APIs in Google Workspace
CRM administration (Salesforce an advantage) and Google Workspace (or similar) management
