St Joseph’s Special School – Demanding and Rewarding Teaching Roles
St Joseph’s Special School provides intensive support for pupils aged 4-18 with moderate general learning disabilities, the majority of whom (approximately 85%) have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or multiple and complex disabilities.
This is a highly specialised and challenging educational environment requiring substantial experience, emotional resilience, and a strong commitment to inclusive education. Our dedicated staff work collaboratively to support the unique and complex needs of our pupils and their families.
We are currently recruiting for:
1 Permanent Teaching Position
3 Specific-Purpose Temporary Teaching Positions
Panel of Substitutes
These roles are best suited to experienced teachers, or newly qualified teachers with a strong passion and demonstrable commitment to special education.
Our team includes 14 class teachers, 37 Special Needs Assistants (SNAs), and subject teachers. Success in this environment requires a high degree of collaboration, flexibility, and professional maturity.
Essential Criteria (Applications not meeting all will not be considered):
Applicants must have direct, substantial experience in:
Teaching pupils with moderate intellectual disabilities, ASD, physical, sensory, or complex needs in a special school or comparable setting
Managing challenging behaviours, including implementing behaviour support and regulation strategies
Collaborating closely with SNAs, including contributions to behaviour management and care planning
You must clearly address each criterion in your letter of application. Generic or incomplete applications will not be shortlisted.
Desirable Experience – Will Aid Shortlisting:
Managing or supporting:
Toileting, hygiene, and other complex care routines
Physiotherapy, Speech & Language Therapy (SLT), Occupational Therapy (OT), and aquatics
Familiarity with a variety of curricula: Primary Curriculum, or Junior Cycle Level 1/2 Learning Programmes
Proficiency with Assistive Technology, AAC devices, and educational apps for learners with special needs
Collaborative work with Multidisciplinary Teams (MDTs)
Experience in developing and implementing IEPs or PPPs
LÁMH sign language
A clear and demonstrated desire to work in special education
