Abacas Special School is a multi-denominational, co-educational school under the patronage of Autism Ireland. Our school caters for children with an autism spectrum disorder and complex needs. Students range from 4 to 18 years of age, have a wide variety of needs and abilities and come from a broad catchment area. Abacas is situated in Kilnamanagh, Tallaght and shares a campus with St. Kevin's Boys' and Girls' National Schools. Our school currently has five classes, each with six students. We also have a full-time Behaviour Practitioner onsite. At Abacas, we use a range of evidence-based teaching strategies such as TEACCH and ABA to develop and enhance academic, behavioural and communication skills. Each student has a comprehensive Individualised Education Plan encompassing curriculum-based work as well as individual behavioural, communication and independence goals. Our students follow the Primary School Curriculum and the Junior Certificate Level 1 and Level 2 Curriculum.

Our school prides itself on its warm, friendly and supportive environment, its highly trained staff and its progressive child-centred attitude and approaches. A key aspect of the Principal's role will be to maintain and continue to foster this environment. We are looking for candidates with excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a solid track record in leadership and management roles in a school or similar environment. Experience of working in a special education environment is desirable but not essential.
