Eolas Breise:
St. Ultan’s Primary School is an integral part of ‘Saint Ultan’s Education and Care Service’ - an innovative, integrated education and care service – the first of its kind in Ireland. It comprises a Nursery, Early Education Unit, Mainstream Primary School with an ASD unit (‘The Orchard’ – 3 classes catering for 18 children) and After School service. St. Ultans is one of only 9 schools in Ireland with the International ‘Ashoka Changemaker Schools’ award.
The role of Principal within Saint Ultan’s Education and Care Service, due to the unique nature of the campus, is a dual role and therefore is different to other primary principal posts. The Principal, along with carrying out duties of primary school principalship – also acts as one of three Campus Managers, working in partnership and in an integrated way with the other two managers on Campus – the Care Manager (who manages the Nursery, Early Education Unit and After School Service) and the Building/Services Manager (who manages the building, general services, financial support and the Community Services Programme). The campus managers are tasked with developing, implementing, reviewing and evaluating the Strategic Plan for Saint Ultans.
The governance structure comprises both a School Board of Management and a Care Board, with one Chairperson chairing both. Each board holds their own individual meetings, and members of both Boards attend Joint Board Meetings regularly during the year. Campus Managers report on operational and strategic matters at these joint meetings. The 3 campus managers meet formally once a month to follow through on strategic work, general operational matters e.g. calendar of events, allocation of shared spaces, HR, funding issues arising etc. The Principal and Care Manager hold formal weekly meetings which focus primarily on cross campus programme implementation. The role of “Principal and Campus Manager” includes ongoing R&D with a specific focus on elevation, in partnership with the other managers. As an innovative project, designing and using service-specific measurement tools and resources along with relevant standardised assessments to evaluate the service is integral to this role. Sharing the learning from the evaluation process along with broader experience of this unique service with relevant stakeholders and other interested parties nationally and internationally is central. Networking is a fundamental aspect of the role of “Principal and Campus Manger”. Initiating and developing strong partnerships with local, national and international universities, colleges and relevant organisations is essential. The “Principal and Campus Manager” sources grants and funding streams to support the many school led, cross campus and community programmes and initiatives in place, which in turn helps sustain and develop the “additionality” and wraparound service that Saint Ultans has set out to achieve.
