St. Ita’s Special National School, Drogheda is a school for pupils with a Mild and Moderate general learning disability and multiple disabilities including Autism, ADHD, hearing and visual impairment. There are currently 18 teachers and 21 SNAs in the school. The school caters for children from 5 to 18 years of age.
We believe that co-operation, courtesy and team work are essential for an effective school and for the personal and educational development of our pupils.
This appointment requires somebody who demonstrates flexibility, is a team player, has a calm disposition, has confidence in dealing with behaviours that challenge, has supervision skills and shows initiative.
It is essential to have experience in a special school. It is also essential that the successful candidate will have the necessary skills to work with pupils who have complex profiles.
Experience in essential competencies include assistance with: personal hygiene/toileting; FEDS (feeding, eating, drinking and swallowing); hoisting (Manual and Electric), behaviours that challenge, use of switches and sensory equipment and proficient in use of Lamh sign language.
It would be desirable to have experience in working with multi-disciplinary teams such as Physiotherapy, Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy and active involvement swimming programmes. Knowledge and familiarity in the use of ipads, computer programmes, interactive whiteboards is also desirable

It is also desirable that candidates should have proven experience in dealing with physically strong students with challenging behaviour and have undergone training in this area.
