MIE is an associated college of Trinity College Dublin, The University of Dublin and offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in education, including initial teacher education programmes.

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION

Marino Institute of Education (MIE) wishes to recruit experienced education professionals to a panel of research / dissertation supervisors on a temporary part-time basis. The need and the frequency at which members of the Supervisory Panel are required is dependent on student numbers, student research topics, and the availability of MIE staff. Interviews will be held as needed and applications will remain active for up to 18 months.

Applications are welcome from professionals who are interested in supervising and assessing student research for the following programmes:
• Bachelor in Education (Primary), B.Ed.
• Bachelor in Science in Education Studies, EdStudies
• Bachelor in Science in Early Childhood Studies, ECE
• Professional Master of Education (Primary), PME.

Research supervision takes place predominantly from September to December, with some programmes (e.g. PME) running throughout the academic year. Applicants should be available for 5 x 2 hour meetings with student group(s) in-person or online. Applicants must be available to attend at least two mandatory training sessions online, and must be availalable to review and assess submissions on an on-going basis. All meetings are scheduled in advance and follow a clear schedule.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS
(i.e. those, without which, a candidate would not be able to do the job. Applications that have not clearly demonstrated that candidates possess the essential requirements will not be shortlisted).

In order to be considered for the position of research supervisor, applicants must demonstrate the following:

o A Level 9 qualification in education or a relevant discipline.
o Excellent knowledge and understanding of education theories, policy and curricula relevant to education at various levels.
o Knowledge of education research methods.
o Experience supporting, mentoring and supervising research students at undergraduate or postgraduate level.
o Excellent interpersonal, communication and organisational skills.

Desirable:
o Level 10 qualification in education or a relevant discipline
o Experience of working in an online environment
o Publications and research conference presentation experience

Candidates must clearly indicate in their application form how they meet each of the pre-requisite skills and experience outlined for the programme.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Education Research is a core element of all programmes at MIE. Students are encouraged to actively engage with published research, to think like researchers and to use data appropriately. The development of a stronger research culture among teacher education students is a priority as we enable students to engage in research that allows them to make connections between knowledge and practice, encouraging them to continually improve practice in the face of new challenges.
The research supervisor plays an important role in supporting our students to develop their practice as education professionals. Working individually and as part of the wider supervisory team, research supervisors have responsibility for mentoring, assessing, and providing feedback to students on research design and development. Duties include but are not limited to:

• Completing required training provided by the MIE Research Methods team, to include Child Protection and GDPR training.
• Meeting students in groups to advise on their research design and ethics application.
• Reviewing draft chapters and research instruments.
• Providing oral and written feedback to students.
• Assessing student dissertations as both first and second reader.
• Working in an online environment and using MIE IT and eLearning systems.
• Ensuring that students adhere to ethical, legislative and policy guidelines of the Institute when conducting research.
• Submitting grade reports as per programme requirements.

APPLICATION, SELECTION PROCESS AND GENERAL INFORMATION.

Interview will be by interview panel consisting of not fewer than 3 persons and will comprise of the most suitable and qualified people to assess applicants in the discipline from its formation date, which will be the date of initial interview. Candidates must produce satisfactory documentary evidence of all training and experience claimed by them, if required.

All successful applicants will be required to participate in Garda vetting. Specific instruction on this process will be given at the appropriate time. Applicants who do not comply with the Institute’s requirements in this regard will be excluded from consideration.
